Meet Leeann

I’m Leeann Grant and I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with Diagnostic Privilege in New York. I work with individual adults who are struggling with anxiety, depression, transitions in life, grief and loss as well as views of the self.

My approach to therapy is everyone is the expert in their own lives, but I’m here to help guide and challenge you to get a better understanding of what has happened, why one thinks the way they do and what they get out of it, and ways to change those patterns. I use an eclectic approach utilizing Supportive Therapy, CBT and Motivational Interviewing to identify patterns and beliefs, see where they originated from and find ways toward change. I’m laid back and create a warm environment in which people can know they will not be judged. I’m also a curious therapist and ask questions to get a better understanding of what your world is like. I’m also not afraid to challenge because therapy is the space to confront uncomfortable situations and finding the way to the other side.

Background

I’ve been in the mental health profession for over 24 years starting as a research aide working with individuals who struggled with severe mental illness. Afterwards, I worked as a case manager going into people’s homes to assist in maintaining a good quality of life while sustaining or gaining independent living. I made the choice to work in the field before going back to school to have a better understanding of those who struggled with mental illness in day-to-day life as advanced degree programs didn’t prepare you for the realities people face when they sit across from you in a therapy setting. Then as I pursued my degree in mental health counseling, I worked in a community behavioral health clinic that provided therapy and psychiatry services to underserved individuals. All these experiences have shaped the way I approach therapy.

What a session is like with me

You set the goals for yourself. My role in your journey is to be the flashlight that guides you out of a dark room, but you have to take the steps to get yourself out.

In our first session and sessions thereafter, there will be a lot of listening as well as questions, support and challenges. I look forward to working with you to get you to your goals and get an understanding of why you made the courageous choice to explore therapy.
